The Proper Presentation
DS Maolalai
tried three different
discount stores coming
from work. I'd bought you a picture
and wanted to buy you a frame
for its proper presentation. the picture
was you and the dog from a day
a few years ago, outside of a cafe
in dublin. it’s a day that stands out.
we were hitting the markets. I was hanging,
you happy – my god, it was miserable
hot. the dog sat on both
of our laps and looked joyous –
her panting a smile as dogs
have on days. this was on pearse st –
the science end of trinity college.
cars the colours of flowers –
their stems and some silver and black.
there were no frames available
the right size I needed
to present without folds
or blank space. the rain
climbed the legs of my trousers
as I stamped through each carpark,
like ivy on an untended wall.
