Would we know what sleeps under
careful footsteps, under
chosen tones that won’t stir, what grows
in the damp,
in the cold
in spaces we fill
with bits of us bitten
with teeth clenched while we rest, unsteadied
like rubber bubbles on red bellies.
Fresh pieces drift under
desks and drawers like receipts
of our yesterday selves we will lose,
gone to join the rabbits that slipped under
our feet like luck
when we run from our troubles.
